The story of Talla

Talla began in 1968, when Dr. Touko Ollila brought his idea of a wooden clog factory to life. His colleagues — orthopedic specialists at the hospital — developed a wooden sole that followed the natural shape of the foot and allowed it to breathe. This innovation became the hallmark of Talla. Thanks to these qualities, Talla clogs have long been worn not only by everyday customers but also by hospital staff — and our most colorful models continue to bring joy to children’s wards across Finland.

All Talla wooden soles are still made using the same trusted last, regardless of model or purpose. For most, our clogs slip on as smoothly as a sock — and after decades of experience, we know that a well-shaped shoe is the best friend of both the foot and the back.

Another important figure in Talla’s history is our dear friend Paavo Puotila, who can rightfully be called a wooden-clog guru. His long career, expert craftsmanship, and warm personality became part of Talla when the company was passed on to its current owners, Erja Räty and Hannu Salminen, in 1986. Although Paavo has since retired, he remains a valued advisor to his successors.

The journey has not been without challenges. In December 2014, a fire at our Myrskylä factory halted production for several months. Work continued with determination, and unique machine parts were tracked down from around the world. In 2016, we celebrated Talla’s 30th anniversary in renewed facilities — at the same familiar address where our story continues today.

Over the decades, Talla has grown into a proud advocate of Finnish wooden-clog culture and a trusted partner for many renowned designers and design houses, including Marimekko and Nanso. We are united by a shared love of quality, Finnish craftsmanship, and down-to-earth service.
